Author Mike Maden has stepped in to write the latest in the TOM CLANCY series. Mark Greaney has written the majority of the books since Tom Clancy died in 2013. Greaney also co-wrote with Clancy LOCKED ON and THREAT VECTOR.
POINT OF CONTACT is right on target with the Clancy series timeliness. The story line incorporates North Korea and the illicit sale of technology and materials through the Chinese and other nefarious back alley characters including of course, Bulgarians!
As readers of this blog are well aware, I am a long time Clancy fan. However, POINT OF CONTACT is a little thin by comparison, but nonetheless, fans may wish to add it to their list. There is still plenty of action though you will find the gripping suspense a little lacking.
Prescient is my favorite description of Mark Greaney, Jack Ryan/ Tom Clancy novels.
TRUE FAITH AND ALLEGIANCE , although written in 2016 , speaks to 2017 cyber theft, the ISIS crisis, Saudi hidden agendas and terrorism inside the United States. The book can only be described as another Greaney, Clancy page by page gripping thriller.
The entire Hendley Associates and White House cast is present and even if you have not read the majority of this series, TRUE FAITH AND ALLEGIANCE can work as a stand alone.
It is not summer yet but put this one on your reading list. It will not disappoint.
You can find overviews of the majority of the Tom Clancy series here at gordonsgoodreads.com.
President Jack Ryan is back in Mark Greaney’s new novel Tom Clancy Full Force and Effect. Greaney hits his stride in his second book in the Clancy legacy following Tom Clancy’s death in October, 2013. His first was Tom Clancy Support and Defend. ( Search here at Gordon’s Good Reads.)
Tom Clancy fans, myself included, will not be disappointed as familiar characters return in the page turning action to which readers have become accustomed in Greaney’s writing. Few, if any, wasted paragraphs.
The timely plot is of course North Korea. The new Supreme Leader Choi-Ji-hoon is more malevolent and even less stable than his deceased father. Driven to build a nuclear ICBM delivery system, Choi-Ji-hoon drives his subservient ghouls into a fiendish plot to source the cash to fund the project, through the discovery of valuable heavy metals in the mountains of the north.
Profiteers join with America’s natural enemies in an unholy alliance with the North Koreans to carry out the complicated task of mining, marketing and converting into cash this new exploitable resource.
Enter ” The Campus” and POTUS in an alliance to stop the madness. Mark Greaney’s research and storytelling approach cable news reality! Tom Clancy fans will enjoy every page, satisfied that there will be still more of this great series.
Support and Defend is the first Tom Clancy novel written exclusively by Mark Greaney following Clancy’ s death in October of last year.z
In this new book, Greaney captures present day fears by building a tale around the theft of top-secret CIA files by an underling within the department. Shades of Edward Snowdon’s exploits are ever-present as Dominic Caruso , a familiar hero to all Clancy fans, embarks on a personal mission to retrieve access codes to the data before CIA human assets throughout the world are compromised. Dominic is the primary character throughout this adventure with The Campus playing only a supporting role. The President and son are missing from this adventure.
Support and Defend is fast paced and straight forward in its plot development as compared to other Clancy books. However, Greaney puts a surprising human face upon ” Transportation Director” Adara Sherman! Not always ,” all business!”
Mark Greaney is carrying on the Tom Clancy tradition. A daunting task!
So much written in the Tom Clancy novels is prescient and his final book, Command Authority, written before his death in late 2013 , is no exception. The latest Jack Ryan novel written with fellow writer and researcher Mark Greaney is all about the future aims of Russia connected to the emergence of the Russian mob following the collapse of the USSR. Who fills the vacuum and what are the aims of Clancy’s new villains?
Clancy casts a wide net in Command Authority including Swiss bankers and secret organizations formed from the remnants of the old KGB. There is government corporate takeovers with millions of unaccounted funds to trail to money laundering though numbered Swiss accounts. Topping the greed list is the lust for power by the new elite in the Kremlin eager to reclaim lost Russian territory and international prestige. Of course there is abundant hardware in hand and in the air.
In the middle of all of the intrigue is President Jack Ryan, Jack Ryan Jr. and of course important roles for John Clark, Ding Chavez, Dominic Caruso and Sam Driscoll. Clancy cleverly creates a flash back sub-plot to Jack Ryan Sr’s former career at CIA in England which directly connects to the present day un coverings there by his son Jack Ryan Jr. The stories intersect perfectly in typical Clancy fashion.
For Clancy fans, place me at the top of the list, it is sad contemplate the end off this wonderful series. It has always been difficult to choose favorites because each resonates with its place in time. Tom Clancy was brilliant in introducing his characters squarely in the middle of the action , always on the edge of reality. I will miss wondering if the Clancy story unfolding in his novels will be on the front page of the morning paper. In many cases Tom Clancy has come very close!
Enjoy Command Authority and reflect on the previous seventeen wonderful Tom Clancy adventures.
Tom Clancy teams with close range combat expert Mark Greaney to bring fans a new work of fiction that touches the edge of reality in a world of cyber warfare! The players from his previous best seller Locked On return in the new Clancy book Threat Vector. Jack Ryan is now president, his son Jack Jr. is even more deeply involved in The Campus black ops. Hendley, Mary Patricia Foley, Ding Chavez, John Clark and Sam Driscoll carry on.
The new bad guys are the Chinese Communists operating a cyber warfare ghost ship called The Center, run by a Dr No like character, Dr. Tong Kwok Kwan. Kwan infects U.S. military computer networks, takes control of U.S. Air Force drone aircraft, invades CIA secret files, destabilizes a U.S. nuclear power plant and shuts down America’s power grid with the click of a mouse.
No Clancy fan will be disappointed with the pace of the novel and all will admire the accuracy of the military, scientific and cyber research provided by co-author Greaney.
President Ryan is faced with an all out land war against the Chinese Communists as they re-claim the South China Sea and threaten U.S. Military presence in the region, all in preparation of an elaborate plan to capture Taiwan! The threat is escalated when it is discovered that The Campus itself has been compromised, with The Center bad guys one step ahead of The Campus good guys. Who, where, when, why and how could that happen? For Jack Ryan Jr., it may be closer than he could imagine.
Enjoy every page as the authors pull together all of the elements of good against evil to develop a plan and strike force involving assassinations , Taiwanese Air Force planes secretly flown by U.S. Pilots, a surgical bombing in the center of Beijing and the tactical planting and withdrawal of the Campus black-ops including the president’s son Jack Ryan Jr.
Clancy is the master in turning contemporary issues into reality. Who but Clancy would have cyber hackers hijack drone aircraft? What is the level of vulnerability of U.S. top-secret communications networks? Are nuclear power plants subject to cyber attacks? The good guys in Threat Vector win but many of the issues raised remain outside the pages of the novel. Suspense from the master, and high marks from this Tom Clancy fan.
Locked On by Tom Clancy with Mark Greaney jumps into the action literally on page one! There is no waiting to begin another Clancy journey and all of the familiar characters assume their roles as the saga continues! What other spy novel gets you up at 4 A.M. to see if Sam Driscoll gets extracted from prison in Waziristan? John Kelly becomes an enemy of the state in a bitter dispute with President Kealty whom Ryan is about to unseat. While the re-election of Jack Ryan Sr. as president is a given, nuclear war heads in the hands of Islamic Terrorists is a drama played out from beginning to end. All of Clancy’s high-tech innovations and cleaver and pointed tie-ins to current political events and themes permeate this new Clancy novel. The India-Pakistan conflict escalates and there is even a love interest for Jack, Jr and that too becomes a cliff hanger for the next edition. Did Mary Pat Foley make a good choice at as match-maker? we will have to wait for that answer.
I am happy to place Locked On in my library next to my hard cover collection of his fifteen previous novels. If you are a Clancy fan I think you will feel them same way.
I have previously referenced in an earlier post the pleasure of reading fourteen Tom Clancy novels in sequence! The characters appear and re-appear and of course there is the ever-present Jack Ryan as in the case of last year’s Dead or Alive.( See earlier Tom Clancy Blog). Against All Enemies is written with Peter Telep
I have just completed Against All Enemies sans Jack Ryan but ex-Navy-Seal Maxwell Moore carries forward Clancy’s genius for crafting fabulous thrillers. A warning, when you arrive at Chapter 42 clear your schedule because you will not be able to put this book down until the last page. If you love Tom Clancy do not leave for summer vacation without Against All Enemies.
Those of us who have already read Dead or Alive will have to wait for the next Clancy volume to find out who wins the election!
Just caught up with Tom Clancy’s fourteenth novel, Dead or Alive. Published just last year after a ten-year hiatus Clancy has yet another new book just out, Against All Fears ( 2011) written with Peter Telep.
Dead of Alive written in conjunction with Clint Blackwood brings back Jack Ryan, Jack Jr. and many of the familiar Clancy players in the search for the “Emir” a thinly veiled hunt for Osama Bin Laden. As always, even though it was written a year before Bin Laden was shot and killed by Navy Seals, Clancy’s novel in great part nailed the scenario including ” Hiding in plain sight!” Every Clancy fan will love the book, thick as always, filled with detail and action.
Of course Tom Clancy novels are most enjoyable if you have had the privilege of reading them in sequence, and I have been that fortunate. Starting with Hunt for Red October and just finishing Dead or Alive I have read them all and now have Against All Fears in the queue. I would find it difficult to choose one favorite so I will name three of the fourteen! The Cardinal of the Kremlin ( 1988), Clear and Present Danger( 1989), and Without Remorse ( 1991).
If you have not read Tom Clancy you have missed the master of intrigue who ties his books to reality and world events in an incredibly prescient manner.
Here is the list in order of publication : The Hunt for Red October( 1984), Red Storm Rising(1986), Patriot Games (1987), The Cardinal of the Kremlin(1988), Clear and Present Danger(1989), The Sum of All Fears(1991), Without Remorse(1993), Debt of Honor(1994), Executive Orders( 1996), Rainbow Six( 1998), The Bear and the Dragon( 2000), Red Rabbit( 2001), The Teeth of the Tiger( 2003), Dead or Alive( 2010), Against All Enemies(2011) Enjoy! Yes, many are frightenly prescient!
